about
The band, known for their genre-bending style, have delivered a poignant track that showcases a new side of their sound. This marks the band's first recording done in a professional studio, produced by Kyle Crusham who has worked with notable musicians such as Paul Simon, Edie Brickell and Ryan Bingham.
"Lie to Me" is a departure from the band's usual style, as it's the closest they've come to a pop song with a blend of pop rock and pyschadelic folk. The track features Camron Rushin's emotive vocals lifted by the angelic backing vocals of Emma Kate and layered over acoustic and electric guitars and synths all coming together to create a dynamic sound that's both haunting and catchy. The single was inspired by a scene in a TV show that resonated with Rushin, who wrote the song to capture the raw emotions of heartbreak and betrayal. "My life has been really good for a while now, so I had to reach far back into my past to remember that gut-punch feeling of realizing that your relationship wasn't as it seemed," Rushin said.
The single features acoustic guitar, bass guitar, piano, hand percussion instruments played by Todd Pruner, electric guitar and keyboard played by Jon Merz, and backing vocals by Emma Kate. Josh Halpern of Marmalakes and Shearwater played the drums. The track was mastered by Erik Wofford.
For The Best Around, "Lie to Me" is a significant step forward in their evolution as a band. All their previous recordings were done in their own makeshift home studios, and this marks their first foray into a professional recording space. The experience of working with Crusham has elevated their sound to new heights, adding a polished sheen to their signature DIY approach.
lyrics
Felt my body separate from my soul as I read the text on your phone
Tuesday night, same time, wear what I bought you, I'll bring wine
And I used to think love was sacrosanct
Now that I'm older I know it ain't
And in my heart I know the truth
But it's not real 'til I hear from you
Ooooooh
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me
Fifteen years down the road, signs were there, should have known
Subtle looks, shifty eyes, closed door whispers, exhausted sighs
And I used to think I was full of pride
But Babe you took me for a ride
And even though I know the truth
No matter what my choice I'll always lose
Ooooooh
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me
We've only got this life to live, it's so short I'll pretend
Hold your hand, kiss you at night, don't worry about me I'm fine
And I used to think I could be everything
Now I'm propelled by this slipstream
And even though I know the truth
After it all, I'd still choose you
Ooooooh
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me
Lie to me

We saw Daniel Romano play this live album when they came through Austin. Most definitely the best concert I've ever seen. It was almost two years ago and I still haven't shut up about it. The Best Around
Charlotte Cornfield is one of my favorite songwriters. I have a twinge of jealousy listening to her songs, wishing I had written them. She knows how to throw a very soft punch to the gut. The Best Around
