about
"Didn't Come Here to Count 'em" is an adrenaline shot from the first note to the last. Multi-instrumentalist Todd Pruner kicks the song off with a string-bending Telecaster lead that is sure to knock over some tables as people jump to their feet. Pruner also plays the bass, acoustic guitar and microKorg synth on the track. Accompanying Pruner in the rhythm section is guest drummer, Ian Romano (of Daniel Romano & The Outfit). Multi-instrumentalist Jon Merz drives home the chorus with this trumpet and trombone horn section, raising the energy to the roof. All the while, singer and songwriter, Camron Rushin tells the tale of a light-hearted sot on a bender who is secretly burdened by being the "victim of the ages." At each stage of his journey, our hero is interrogated about how many he's had to drink, to which he replies, "I didn't come here to count 'em / I came here to drink 'em!" The song reaches a climactic ending as the band heads into jazzed-out, wall-of-sound territory.
Rushin discovered the key line in the song years ago while out with his family when his aunt asked his uncle how many beers he had had to drink. "I didn't come here to count 'em. I came here to drink 'em," he replied. Everyone in the groups' ears piqued as they almost said in unison, "that'd be a great line for a country song."
"Didn't Come Here to Count 'em" was mixed and mastered by Erik Wofford of Cacophony Recorders in Austin, Tx.
lyrics
Out with the boys at the Starlight
Saw the prettiest girl I’d ever seen in my life
Beer goggles came in to focus
Oh shit, That’s my wife
She tore in to me
All my buddies started to flee
She was very succinct
How many have you had to drink?
Said if you don’t know me now
I don’t know what you’re thinking
I didn’t come here to count ‘em
I came here to drink ‘em
Said if you don’t know me now
I don’t know what you’re thinking
I didn’t come here to count ‘em
I came here to drink ‘em
Out on the road which I don’t condone
Thought it was safe, was only driving home
That’s when I saw those Christmas lights
Oh shit, It’s July
Officer lit in to me
Said he’d never seen such a BAC.
Said before I take you to the clink,
how many have you had to drink?
Now you don’t know me pal
And I know my breath is stinking
But I don't go out to count'em
I go out to drink
Now you don’t know me pal
And my boat it’s been sinking
So I don't go out to count'em
I go out to drink
They stood me before a judge
And nothing would make him budge
Thought if I told him my story
He’d take pity on me
You don’t know me your honor
But I’m the victim of the ages
I can work twice as hard
It never shows up in my wages
So maybe you know me now
I just don’t like thinking
So I don’t go out to count ‘em
I go out to drink ‘em

We saw Daniel Romano play this live album when they came through Austin. Most definitely the best concert I've ever seen. It was almost two years ago and I still haven't shut up about it. The Best Around
Charlotte Cornfield is one of my favorite songwriters. I have a twinge of jealousy listening to her songs, wishing I had written them. She knows how to throw a very soft punch to the gut. The Best Around
